Broken Crayons Still Create Masterpieces – So Can You
The other morning, I was lost in thought, gazing out my living room window with coffee in hand. My mind raced with a thousand “if onlys”: If only I had the right resources. If only I had the perfect plan. If only I had more time. Maybe you’ve felt that too—like you’re one missing piece away from really getting started.
Then something unexpected caught my eye: a lone, red crayon rolling around on my floor—left behind by a friend’s child who had visited. The sight of that crayon brought me straight back to grade school art class, where all we had were broken bits, torn wrappers, and well-worn stubs. But none of that mattered: we never waited for a perfect box. If we didn’t have sky blue, we used teal. If red was down to a nub, we found magenta. We used whatever we had to create our masterpieces.
Isn’t it funny how, back then, lack never stopped us? We just created, no questions asked. Yet somehow, as adults, we convince ourselves we need a flawless setup before diving in. We wait for the “perfect box of crayons”—perfect timing, perfect funds, perfect vision. But you and I both know life rarely deals a perfect hand.
Here’s what I’ve learned: those cracks and missing pieces force us to become resourceful, creative, and brave. When you let go of the quest for perfection, it’s like freeing a part of your spirit that’s been craving permission to just try.
So here’s my invite to you (and me—because I need this reminder, too), look around at whatever “broken crayons” you already have. Maybe it’s that half-finished business idea, a spare hour on the weekend, or a dusty art kit in the closet. Grab it—imperfections, worn edges, and all—and make something today. Write a single page. Brainstorm one new strategy. Take that walk you’ve been putting off.
You don’t need more to get started. You just need to pick up the crayon in front of you. Trust me—once you start coloring outside the lines again, you’ll realize how much magic has been waiting for you all along.
Continue to live inspired,
