During a Stanford commencement speech, Steve Jobs said something that changed the way I look at life: “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect your future.”

This powerful message is a reminder to trust in our ability to navigate the unknown. It’s a challenge we all face, that nagging question: “How do I know everything will be okay?” The truth is, life offers no guarantees, no neatly laid-out maps.

I often get asked, “Eddie, how did you end up where you are now? Did you always know you were going to be a writer/speaker?” The answer is most definitely, no. My journey was one of following intuition and connecting the dots.

It began in the corporate world, where I adopted the structured 9-5 routine and absorbed the complexities of corporate America. I learned a lot, but it didn’t take long for me to realize this conventional path was not where my heart truly belonged.

I quickly ventured into more creative projects such as composing music, writing, and making short films with the camera. This newfound freedom was intoxicating, and I knew I was on the right track. I eventually dove headfirst into music production, losing myself in the art of producing both my own songs and others in the greater Boston area.

Before long, live music performances followed, pushing me far beyond the edges of my comfort zone and validating the joy I got from captivating an audience. The stage became my proving ground, where I learned invaluable lessons about persistence and resilience. 

As my journey of self-expression deepened, I used storytelling in video as the vehicle for my emotions and ideas, allowing me to connect with others in ways I never imagined. Through art, I found a language that transcended words alone. 

This creative evolution also opened the door to public speaking, where I found myself again connecting with an audience in real time. Standing before a crowd, I realized that words, when spoken with conviction, have the power to move hearts and minds, creating a ripple effect of inspiration. It was as though everything had clicked, and where I was meant to be.

I share all this to show that my path was neither straight nor predictable, not perfectly executed or pre-planned, but each step was instrumental in shaping who I am today. Life, in all its messy, chaotic beauty, reveals its true splendor when we embrace its unpredictability—it’s in these moments of uncertainty that we find our greatest growth.  

Sometimes, as Steve Jobs mentioned, things don’t make sense looking forward. You have to bet on yourself. You must trust your intuition and your ability to adapt and adjust along the way.

As you look out the window, remember that everything you need to design your dream life is waiting out there. Don’t tether yourself to a meticulously pre-planned path; instead, trust YOUR OWN ability to make the magic from the noise and chaos. You have that greatness within you, waiting for the mere opportunity to expand.
