Why I Ditched My Desk for a Spontaneous Adventure
Last week, I was sitting in my studio, coffee in hand, feet up, listening to drops of rain landing on the window. It took me by surprise at first. I had almost forgotten that it rains in Southern Arizona.
It’s amazing how fast “new things” become ordinary. Our default is to acclimate and find routine, structure, and normalcy. While this is fine, don’t get me wrong, it means that sometimes we have to manufacture our own inspiration.
In other words, excitement and momentum rarely come to us. We must go to them.
So, that morning, my friend and videographer James and I decided to pack up the cameras and head north to Sedona for the weekend. Was it practical? Not really. I could have recorded five videos at my desk in the same amount of time. But it felt the most exciting, and I felt a strong pull to go there.
When something feels good in your gut, even something as small or arbitrary as a quick drive down the road, there’s value in shutting the brain off and turning the heart on. As I’m sure you know, the brain resists impromptu decisions like this. Funny enough though, it will thank you later. It has yet to realize the value intertwined in the “irrational.”
So, off I went on a seemingly random two-hour car ride with a friend to Sedona. We hiked mountains, captured incredible video footage (can’t wait to share), and took in breathtaking views. After a few days, we returned feeling invigorated and inspired.
Again, was the trip practical? Not at all. But that’s entirely the point.
Sitting in my studio that night, I felt amazing—more inspired, creative, and ready to pour my stories into words. Wayne Dyer often referenced one of my favorite anecdotes: When one squeezes an orange only orange juice comes out. You’ll never get grapefruit juice from an orange. Similarly, you can only give to the world what already exists within you.
The relentless pressure to achieve more often prevents us from taking the time for things that may seem insignificant in the short term but are crucial for our happiness. Embracing beauty, excitement, and inspiration isn't a luxury—it’s the foundation on which you build everything else. It not only helps us cope with stress and improve our work—it strengthens our relationships and overall contentment.
What is that one thing you’ve been putting off because it doesn’t seem to make sense or isn’t aligned with your immediate needs?
Do it. Take that step, follow that childlike sense of curiosity, and let the adventure begin.
Continue to live inspired,
