Feeling Stuck? Try This
Ever feel like your problems are insurmountable, like giant, unsolvable monsters with razor-sharp teeth? Same here.
But here’s the thing—most solutions are simpler than we think and often right under our noses. We’re wired to overthink, believing that big challenges must have equally grand solutions. Truth is, they rarely do.
Let me share a story. A few weeks ago, I was on a train in Venice with my family, dragging what felt like a mountain of suitcases after a month of travel. Picture this: tiny aisles, annoyed passengers side-eyeing us, and me trying to figure out where to stash these bags amidst the chaos. The overhead compartments looked like they were designed to hold a baguette, not a 55-pound suitcase. My brother and I quickly began piecing together a plan to hide the luggage until everyone was seated and we could stack it in the aisle.
Then, in a sudden “why not” moment, I lifted one of the bags and started jamming it into the compartment. Somehow, after about a minute of awkward pushing, it slid in. We burst out laughing and proceeded to cram the rest of the luggage up there. Turns out, the “problem” wasn’t a problem after all—it was just waiting for me to stop overthinking and start acting.
While this scenario may seem trivial, its theme of seemingly simple solutions can be found in many aspects of day-to-day life. Take headaches, for example—yes, literal ones. I used to suffer from excruciating headaches and tried everything under the sun—ibuprofen, doctor visits, CT scans. I even found my mind drifting to worst-case scenarios like surgery. What finally helped? Electrolyte tablets. Yup, that’s it. That simple fix changed everything.
More examples? How about my diet? It took me longer than I’d like to admit to stop loading my cabinets with flaming hot Cheetos and other junk that was supposedly for “special occasions.” What about years of sports injuries? Turns out, taking ten minutes a day to stretch was transformative. These solutions seem obvious now but in the thick of it? They felt hidden under a mountain of complexity. I was seeking solutions as painful as the problem, not understanding that the answers were allowed to be, and often were, quite simple and accessible.
So, think about your own life. What’s one thing that’s weighing you down right now? Pause for a moment and ask yourself, “What’s the one step I can take today?” You’d be amazed at how many dragons can be defeated with that mindset. Use what you have, right where you are. The solutions are often right in front of us, waiting for the first move.
You’ve got this—believe in yourself, take that first step, and open your eyes to the possibilities. That combination? It works miracles.
