Just throw the ball
Hey Gang,
Last Friday, I was working at my desk all morning. By lunchtime, my shoulders were tight, my brain felt foggy, and I needed to get outside for a few minutes. So I walked across the street to grab something to eat.
On the way, I passed a small dog park and noticed a man sitting alone on a bench, completely absorbed in his phone. About five feet in front of him sat a puppy. A ball rested between its paws. The puppy wasn’t barking. It wasn’t demanding anything. It was simply staring at its owner, perfectly still, waiting for the moment he looked up.
My first thought was immediate: Come on, man. Put down the phone. Throw the ball.
I kept walking, picked up my lunch, and returned to my desk. But the image stuck with me. I tried to get back to work, yet every so often I saw those eyes again. That ball. That little dog waiting patiently for someone who was only five feet away.
And I began wondering why it bothered me so much. It was just a stranger looking at his phone. I knew nothing about him. Maybe he was answering an important message. Maybe I had misunderstood the entire moment. Still, I couldn’t let it go.
Then it hit me. I wasn’t really thinking about him. I was thinking about myself. Because we don’t see the world only as it is. We see ourselves reflected in it. And somewhere inside that little scene, I recognized something painfully familiar: the tension between what matters and what keeps stealing our attention from it.
That puppy became a mirror. It made me wonder what I had been asking to wait. The ideas I keep promising I’ll return to. The people I love but don’t always give my full attention. The places I want to see. The risks I want to take. The version of myself I keep postponing until life becomes quieter and more convenient.
We don’t ignore the things that matter because we don’t care. We ignore them because we assume they’ll still be there tomorrow. Tomorrow, when work settles down. Tomorrow, when we have more energy. Tomorrow, when the timing is better. But tomorrow has a funny way of becoming next week. Then next month. Then someday.
Maybe you have something sitting five feet in front of you right now. Maybe it’s your health. Maybe it’s your children asking you to play. Maybe it’s the phone call you’ve been meaning to make. The trip you keep talking about. The business you’ve imagined for years. The book you still insist you’ll write someday. Maybe the next chapter of your life isn't hiding. Maybe it's been sitting right in front of you all along quietly waiting for you to notice it.
So today, look up. Put down the phone. Throw the ball.
Talk soon,
