Nothing changed. Except everything.
Hey Gang,
One of my favorite ways to mix up my training is a heated workout class. Forty-five minutes. Body circuits. I love throwing it in with the running I do because it challenges me in a completely different way.
There’s one class I’ll never forget. About three-quarters of the way through, we were doing weighted squats. And you know that point in a workout when everything starts to arrive at once? Your legs are burning. Your heart rate is up. The weight somehow feels heavier than it did thirty seconds ago. And the room that was hot when you walked in now feels like it's trying to cook you alive. That's where I was, right in the thick of it.
And then the instructor said something I haven't stopped thinking about. “The discomfort you feel right now is a privilege.” A privilege.
And for whatever reason, those words completely changed the moment for me. Nothing physically changed. The room didn't get cooler. The weight didn't get lighter. My legs didn't stop burning. But suddenly, I wasn't thinking about how uncomfortable I was. I was thinking about how lucky I was to be uncomfortable.
I chose this. I walked through that door. I have a body capable of being pushed. A mind capable of asking it for a little more. And the freedom to spend part of my morning finding out what happens when I do. Same room. Same weight. Same burning legs. Completely different experience.
And it made me wonder how often we get the story wrong about the difficult parts of our lives. Think about your own life for a second. How much of it are you trying to get through right now?
The long days. The early mornings. The uncertainty. The responsibility. The thing you're building that isn't happening fast enough.
We tend to think the good life begins when those things end. When it gets easier. When we finally arrive. When the weight comes off. But maybe we've got that backward. Maybe some of the weight is there because you're carrying something that matters. Maybe the uncertainty exists because you're going somewhere you've never been. Maybe the struggle isn't interrupting the life you're trying to build. Maybe it's evidence that you're building it.
Of course, there are things in life we don't choose. Pain we wouldn't ask for. Loss we would undo in a heartbeat. Hardship doesn't become beautiful simply because we find the right words for it.
But there are hard things we do choose. We choose to build. To train. To risk. To begin again. To step into rooms where we're not yet the person we need to become. And maybe we spend too much time resenting the price while forgetting what we're buying.
That's what changed for me in that room. Thirty seconds earlier, all I wanted was for the discomfort to end. Then someone reminded me what the discomfort meant. I was there because I could be. My legs burned because they could carry me. The weight was heavy because I had chosen to pick it up. And the struggle existed because somewhere on the other side of it was a version of me I hadn't met yet.
So maybe the next time life gets heavy, the question isn't always: “How do I make this easier?” Maybe it's: “What am I lucky enough to be carrying?” Because sometimes the weight isn't the punishment. Sometimes being able to carry it is a privilege.
