One Small Shift for a Better Week

Hey Gang,

I was at my favorite breakfast spot, Snooze, the other morning.

Nothing out of the ordinary. Just one of those slow starts where everyone looks half-awake, and nobody’s really talking. The quiet hum of a morning still trying to get going.

I was sipping my coffee when I noticed the man in the booth across from mine. Sighing. Shifting in his seat. Picking his phone up, putting it back down again. Running a hand through his hair like the day had already gone wrong and it wasn’t even 8 a.m.

You could almost feel it on him. That invisible weight people carry when life hasn’t been cooperating lately.

I couldn’t help watching when the waitress walked over, smiled, and said, “Good morning, how are you today?”

And without even looking up, he said, “I’ve had better.” Not rude. Just tired. The kind of answer people give when life feels heavier than they expected it to be.

She nodded, handed him his menu, and quietly said, “Well… I hope today surprises you.” That was it. No speech. No wisdom. Just a sentence dropped gently into the moment.

But something shifted. His shoulders lifted a little. He actually looked up. Almost like someone had interrupted whatever story he’d already decided the day was going to follow.

And it made me realize how often our days start already decided. We wake up carrying yesterday forward. Assuming stress will continue. Expecting the same problems, the same tension, the same outcomes.

But sometimes the smallest shift isn’t fixing anything. It’s leaving space for the day to surprise you. Not forcing optimism. Just not locking yourself into disappointment before anything even happens.

I don’t know if that man’s day got better. But I noticed mine did. All because of one sentence I almost missed.

Maybe this week doesn’t need a major reset. Just a small pause… before deciding how it’s going to feel.

Talk soon,
