Redefining Normal: The Power of Starting Over

You cannot build on broken things...

What in the world do I mean by this? Let me explain…

Have you ever found yourself in an unhealthy or nonproductive situation, but instead of fixing the problem at its root, you attempt to mask it or put a bandaid on the metaphorical bullet wound?

It’s funny how a seemingly ordinary conversation I had the other day led me into some deep introspection on the topic.

So here's what happened—as I’ve mentioned over the years, my past injuries have been quite persistent, leading me to reach out to my corrective exercise specialist, James.

As we came up with a game plan to fix my ailing shoulders, I asked James about additional workouts I could do on my own. His response, “I don’t want you to do anything—you’re normal isn’t ideal, and we need to fix your normal before you add more.”

This really got me thinking—how often have I tried to build on broken things instead of addressing the root of the problem?

Whether it’s in fitness routines, personal habits, or my creative process, I’ve opted to push forward with the status quo, even when flawed. Instead of fixing the foundation, I sealed in the cracks.

The key to progress, it seems, lies not in patching up the wrong actions, but in redefining ‘normal.’

Rebuilding from the ground up can be painful because it means acknowledging that something isn’t right. It requires patience and hard work. But here’s the good part—when you embrace this process, you create a solid foundation for future growth.

This idea reminds me of a good friend who battled with substance abuse for years. Despite numerous attempts at recovery, he just couldn't make it happen—until he made a bold move—he uprooted and altered his environment.

I still recall him proudly telling me how his path to recovery started when he tore down his old life and rebuilt a new one. He redefined “normal” in his world.

Sometimes life demands that you step back, put the weights down, and increase your flexibility. There is no strength without a solid foundation. So, if your normal isn’t where you want it to be, congratulations. You’ve acquired an awareness that few grasp.

So start chipping away at what's holding you back so that, in the not-too-distant future, you can be stronger than you’ve ever been.

Live inspired,

Eddie
