A Reminder To Keep Going
You’ve heard it before, “When one door closes, another opens.” But what they don’t tell you is sometimes it’s not the second door. Or even the third door. Sometimes, it’s the one you reach after countless rejections, after every voice in your head and every doubt in your heart tells you to give up.
This is where greatness is born—not from luck or talent alone, but from sheer, unrelenting persistence.
Take John Paul DeJoria, co-founder of a billion-dollar hair products company. His journey wasn't a golden path; it was littered with slammed doors and missed opportunities. But he had a mantra, something that kept him going—the idea of the “51st door.” He believed that doors closing weren't a reflection of his worth. They were merely obstacles on the way to the right one. You have to keep knocking—that’s the game.
I know this struggle all too well. It took me seven years on YouTube before things finally clicked. Seven years of pouring my heart and soul into content that received underwhelming feedback. It wasn’t personal. It didn’t mean that I wasn't good enough. It was part of my journey. Each piece of content was a step forward, a chance to pivot, adapt, and try again.
And it’s not just in my creative work. I’ve faced this same challenge in other areas of my life. Shoulder injuries over the years have repeatedly derailed my fitness journey. The answer was never to stop. It was to keep going, strengthen myself, and adjust my workouts until I found something sustainable.
Too often, we stop far too short of our potential. We see closed doors as signs that we’re not good enough, that maybe we should pack up and go home. But what if the door you need is just a few knocks away? What if that breakthrough, the success, the life you want is waiting behind the 51st door?
Remember this: Life’s greatest accomplishments are often achieved by people too ignorant of the odds to know it was impossible. They didn’t see closed doors as failures; they saw them as steps to the path to success.
So this week, I challenge you to be stubborn. To be relentless. If a door closes, knock on the next one. If that one closes too, knock again. And again. And again.
Here’s to the 51st door and the courage to keep knocking.
