Storms Always Feel Permanent... Until They Aren’t

Hey Gang,

Last week, I was trying to get in touch with my folks back home in Boston. I called. Nothing. Sent a few texts. Still nothing.

Then, news of a big nor’easter started showing up on the screen here in Scottsdale. Footage of heavy snow. Downed trees. Power lines swaying in the wind.

And suddenly those unanswered calls started feeling a little heavier. You know how the mind works in moments like that. It starts filling in the blanks. Are they okay? Did the power go out? Did something happen?

Then finally, a text came through. Just a short message: “We’re okay. Power’s out. Phones barely work.” That was it. But somehow those few words were enough to settle everything.

Later, when things slowly started coming back online, I was able to talk with them about what the storm had actually been like.

Turns out it was one of those real New England storms, the kind that shuts everything down. Power out. Trees down across the roads. No Wi-Fi. No TV. Just wind howling outside and people digging themselves out of the snow.

When you’re in the middle of a storm like that, it feels endless.

Everything slows down. Normal life disappears. You’re not thinking about next week or next month. You’re just trying to get through the day.

But then something happens that always seems a little surprising.

A few days pass. The wind dies down. The sun comes out. And before long, the same town that looked completely frozen just days before slowly comes back to life. Cars start moving again. Lights flicker back on. People step outside. Life quietly resumes where it left off.

Storms are strange like that. When you’re inside them, they feel permanent. But they never are.

And I think the storms we face in life work the same way. The hard seasons. The uncertainty. The moments when everything feels like it’s been knocked sideways.

When you’re inside those moments, it can feel like that’s just how life is now. Like the storm has moved in for good. But storms don’t work that way. They move through. The sky clears. And eventually the sun finds its way back. Maybe not tomorrow. Maybe not even next week. But it always returns.

Sometimes the only thing we need to do in those moments is exactly what people do during a nor’easter back home: Keep the lights on if you can. Dig out a little at a time. Help the people around you. And wait for the sky to clear.

Because sooner or later…it always does.

Talk soon,
