This is why you're still stuck....
Hey Gang,
The other night I was walking the mountain trails here in Scottsdale, chasing a glimpse of the full moon when I caught sight of a cactus just off the path, glowing in the moonlight, still, unwavering. A miracle of a thing. Thriving on almost nothing. No rain, no softness, no luxury. Just grit. Just adaptation.
And for whatever reason, it sent me spiraling back to my days in Florida, to the palm trees bending in hurricane winds. Surviving not by toughness, but by surrender. By learning the rhythm of the storm.
Two completely different environments. Two completely different survival strategies. Both beautiful. Both necessary. And then it hit me:
Humans are the only creatures that can adapt to environments that slowly destroy them and call it normal.
A cactus in a swamp would rot. A palm tree in the desert would starve. They know right away: “This isn’t where I’m meant to grow.” But people? We stay. We adapt until we forget we’re adapting. And the irony is, we’re the only ones who can get up and walk away.
Still, we bend for approval, we dry out in love that never waters us, we sit in jobs that hollow us out, we fold ourselves small to fit inside rooms we’ve already spiritually outgrown. We survive in places our souls were never meant to live… and we convince ourselves it’s strength because we’ve gotten good at enduring what we were never meant to accept.
But strength isn’t just enduring the wrong environment. Strength is choosing the right one. Strength is knowing when your soul is in drought. Strength is knowing when you’ve bent so far you don’t remember what standing tall feels like. Strength is recognizing when you’ve adapted out of habit, not alignment.
The cactus taught me that life can thrive in the harshest conditions…but only when it’s in the environment it was designed for.
The palm tree taught me that flexibility is wisdom… but only in winds it was meant to withstand.
And somewhere on that trail, moon rising, I realized:
This year wasn’t just about what I survived. It was about learning where I actually thrive.
And maybe that’s the invitation for all of us as the year comes to a close: Look at the places where you’ve been merely surviving. Look at the environments you’ve contorted yourself to fit into. Look at the relationships, routines, expectations, and roles that require you to bend so far you crack.
Then ask the most important questions you can ever ask:
“Is this my desert or just my drought?” “Is this my storm or just my surrender?”
You don’t have to thrive everywhere. You’re not meant to.
But you are meant to find where your roots go deep, where you are nourished, where you can grow tall without apologizing for the space you take up. You are meant for an environment that brings you back to life. One that reminds you of your potential. One that doesn’t just keep you alive…but makes you magnificent.
