Transform Your Mindset With Daily Gratitude

Ever notice how we often don’t appreciate the true value of what we have until it’s taken away? It's only in its absence that we realize how fortunate we were. Think about it—sports injuries, debilitating illnesses that leave you bedridden, people who come and go throughout our lives, and the different chapters of growth we navigate. These moments remind us to cherish what we have.

One of my favorite sayings is “A healthy man wants one thousand things, a sick man wants only one.” This quote reminds me of the power of appreciating the status quo. The greatest gifts in life are often those we already possess—we just need to remind ourselves of their value.  We need to consciously cultivate that perspective.

I’m a pretty practical person, and I’ve found practicing gratitude has tangible, valuable benefits. It helps put the daily bumps and bruises into perspective, making them seem much more manageable.

For example, imagine a social media partnership I was excited about didn’t work out. Bummer—I loved the brand and had so many ideas for integrating their story into Your World Within. Seriously, I had big plans. But for various reasons, it didn’t work out, and we decided to part ways. My first instinct?  “Poor me. I’m so mad. What a disappointment.”

Now let’s say the same thing happens, but after I have taken the time to sit down and reflect on the things I’m most grateful for that morning. “I am grateful for the opportunity to do what I love for a living. I am grateful for the resources available to me, for the state and country I live in, the people in my life, my health, and the sauna (why not, I really like the sauna.)” I put my pen down, close my journal, walk into the kitchen, and then get the news.

Well, that really puts the business situation into perspective, making it seem almost laughable. Who cares about one single missed opportunity?  Look at everything I have. I’ll find more chances, and I’m lucky to have the ability to pursue them.

Creating this baseline of gratitude has changed my life. Reminding yourself how fortunate you are puts those little issues in check, because let’s be real, it’s very easy to get hung up on the small stuff.

Gratitude is like armor—it provides the strength of knowing you are blessed and the perspective to minimize the obstacles you encounter. Here are a few ways you can create the habit of practicing gratitude in your own life;

1. Gratitude Walks

Take a walk and consciously appreciate your surroundings. Notice the beauty of nature, the smiles of strangers, or the warm sun on your skin. These small moments of mindfulness can have a big impact on your mood.

2. Thank You Notes or Texts

Write a heartfelt note to someone who has made a difference in your life. It could be a friend, family member, or even a coworker. Expressing gratitude not only makes them feel valued but also strengthens your connection.

3. Gratitude Journal

At the end, or the start, of each day, jot down three things you're thankful for. They can be as simple as enjoying a good meal or as profound as having supportive friends. This practice rewires your brain to focus on the positives.

Remember, gratitude isn’t about ignoring life’s challenges. It’s about acknowledging them while also celebrating the good stuff.

So, don’t overlook all the simple joys that make life beautiful.

Wishing you a week filled with gratitude and joy.
