Trust The Process
Have you ever found yourself on a flight, searching for a way to make the hours disappear? That was me a few days ago, somewhere high above the Atlantic, when I decided to watch the miniseries 1883. It’s a story about the grit and sheer will of settlers braving the Oregon Trail—a journey full of famine, storms, and unthinkable challenges, all for a shot at a better life.
But one scene stuck with me. In it, a young woman is wounded by an arrow that pierces her liver. As her father tends to her, he cautions her when she tries to push forward too soon, saying “They cauterized the outside of you, but time is the only thing that can stitch the inside.”
I love this line—because isn’t that just life? We take care of what we can, bandage up what’s visible, but the real healing and growth? Those are slower, deeper changes that time alone can bring. We do our best and keep moving forward, but big transformations unfold at their own pace, often beyond our control.
When it comes to healing or reaching a goal, I often find myself trying to speed things up. After a loss or setback, we throw ourselves into new activities, surround ourselves with uplifting people, and try to move on. But healing and true progress aren’t always on our schedule. Sometimes, we're doing everything right on the outside, but growth on the inside takes its own sweet time.
In 2014, I heard Les Brown share a story of the bamboo tree. A bamboo seed lies dormant underground for years, seemingly doing…..nothing. It needs years of watering and care. But then, almost overnight, it shoots up, reaching remarkable heights. The bamboo tree is a powerful reminder that results take time, and persistence often happens out of sight. You have to nurture the seed long before you see any sign of growth.
There’s an old saying: “Trust the process.” It’s easy to get frustrated when you’re putting in effort without seeing immediate results. But the truth is that life operates on two tracks: the things you control—your actions, your choices, your mindset—and the things that take their own time. Success comes from honoring both—the strength to take action and the grace to let go of what’s beyond us.
So, on days when progress seems invisible, when doubt creeps in, and you wonder if the effort is worth it, remember: greatness demands both persistence and patience. Trust that the time you’re investing is stitching together the parts of your dream that you can’t yet see.
