When growth means saying goodbye

We’re taught to add.

Add titles. Add habits. Add expectations. We measure success in accumulation.

But sometimes growth isn’t about what you stack on...it’s what you finally put down.

I was standing in front of my closet the other day, overwhelmed. Not because I had nothing to wear, but because I had too much that didn’t feel like me anymore.

Clothes that once fit perfectly now hung there like old stories I couldn’t stop rereading. I’d pass them over, day after day, yet never get rid of them. Why?

Because at one point, I loved them. Because I paid too much for them. Because I was afraid of the emptiness they’d leave behind.

Sound familiar?

We do the same with ideas. With friendships. With versions of ourselves we’ve outgrown but still protect out of loyalty or fear.

We think letting go is failure. But maybe letting go is the beginning of becoming.

It’s like a garden. Sometimes, no matter how lovingly a vine once wrapped itself around your world, if it’s choking out the light, it has to go.

You pull the weeds not because they’re bad. You pull them because they’re taking up the space where something beautiful could grow.

Sometimes we don’t need more. We need space.

Space to breathe. To become. To create something aligned with who we are now, not who we were.

Because the past isn’t something to resent or erase, it’s something to bless and release. Not a burden but a stepping stone.

So maybe this week, growth doesn’t look like a new goal or a fresh routine. Perhaps it looks like a breath. A closet cleaned. A quiet goodbye to something you once needed but no longer do.

Let this be your permission to release. To make space for something lighter, truer, and beautifully new.
