You Can Go... But You Might Not Come Back

Hey Gang,

A few weeks ago, I flew to Aspen. Great trip. Great people. Great conversations.

Getting there? A little messy. Getting back? Felt like the opening scene of a Stephen King novel.

Aspen, for those who don’t know, has a tiny runway. High elevation. Wild winds. Basically, a place where planes attempt to land. Sometimes.

So what happens is… planes circle. And circle. And circle. Waiting for a window. And if that window doesn’t come? You don’t land. You get rerouted to an airport two hours away. Which is exactly what happened to me on the way in. Six hours late. No big deal. Adventure, right?

Now the way back…That’s where things unraveled. My flight was at 10:30 AM.  I’m watching the screen: Canceled. Canceled. Canceled. And somehow, mine is still on. I’m thinking, “Alright… maybe I got lucky.” Five minutes before boarding: “Your plane is currently circling… and cannot land.” Translation: You don’t have a plane.

Chaos. People scrambling. No flights. No options. And in my head… circus music starts playing. So now it’s this: Stay another 24–30 hours  (and probably deal with the same thing tomorrow), or … Get to an airport two hours away and hope something opens up.

No Ubers. No clear plan. Just a room full of people trying to figure it out.

Eventually, after asking enough people, someone hands me a phone number. I call it. Pay upfront and hope someone will actually show up. A few hours later… a guy does. Nice suit. Nice car. Great mood. Looks just like a cartoon character.

We start driving. I start thinking: “I’m behind. I’ve got so many things to do. Videos to release. Meetings. Group workouts planned.” And suddenly this small inconvenience starts feeling… massive. Like everything is slipping. Like I’m being pulled further and further away from where I should be.

Then we pull over. He gets out to clean the windshield. And something about that moment… Just reset everything. It hit me: This isn’t a disaster. This is a story. Nothing in my life was actually falling apart. I just decided it was. Because that’s what we do. We take something small and let it grow into something overwhelming.

But honestly, everything I thought was urgent could wait. Not some of it. All of it. And just like that, the entire experience changed. Same situation. Different lens.

That’s the skill. Not avoiding chaos. Not controlling outcomes. But being able to step back and say: “There’s something here.” Because life is full of rerouted flights. Plans that don’t land. Detours you didn’t ask for.

You can’t always control the circumstances. But you can always choose your response. That’s the power. That’s the edge.

So yeah, I’ll probably avoid flying into Aspen again. But I know this: There will be more reroutes. More delays. More moments that don’t go as planned. And when they come, I’ll try to remember this: Look up. Zoom out. And don’t miss what’s hidden inside the inconvenience. Because sometimes the thing that feels like it’s setting you back is actually trying to show you something.

And if you’re not careful, you’ll miss it.

Talk soon,
